Le Maïdo is a famous viewpoint on the western rim of the Cirque de Mafate, above Saint-Paul on Réunion, and this hike climbs to its summit on foot instead of using the road. The trail begins at the La Petite France trailhead near Saint-Paul, reached by driving the RD6 from Saint-Paul, about 35 minutes, with a free car park. The round trip covers roughly 11 km and takes four to five hours, gaining about 800 m to reach the summit at 2,205 m, so it is a sustained climb without technical difficulty. The path begins in the humid forest zone, where heath and tamarind trees give shade, and gradually moves into more open terrain with rock, roots and packed earth underfoot. Higher up the vegetation is lower and exposure to wind and sun increases. At the top, a railed viewpoint overlooks the huge drop into Mafate, with the Piton des Neiges and the Rempart des Salazes ridge visible on clear mornings. Cloud often fills the cirque by late morning, so early starts are strongly preferred, and temperatures at the summit can be cool, requiring a warm jacket. There are no refuge huts or reliable water sources on the route, so hikers should carry around two litres of water per person. For those who do not want to complete the whole climb, turning around at forest clearings gives partial views. Anyone unable to walk all the way down can also arrange a pickup at the summit, since the road to the viewpoint is open and drivers can reach it, which provides an easy bail-out option. Facilities at the summit are limited, so visitors should bring snacks, and a camera is worthwhile for the panorama over the cirque.
