The Piton de la Fournaise summit trail is the signature volcano hike of Réunion, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean. The route starts at the Pas de Bellecombe car park (2,311 m) on the rim of the Enclos Fouqué caldera, reached by driving the Route du Volcan from Bourg-Murat on the Plaine des Cafres.

Parking is free and no permit is required for the standard trail, though access is closed when the volcano is in eruption alert, so visitors should check the current status with the Piton de la Fournaise volcano observatory and the Parc national de La Réunion before setting out. The round trip covers roughly 8.5 km with about 500 m of ascent and normally takes four to five hours. From the car park a stepped path descends the caldera wall to the Enclos floor, then crosses a barren plain of black basalt and lava flows marked with white painted arrows. The surface is rough, sharp lava rock and loose scoria, so ankles and soles take a beating, and there is almost no shade or shelter. Along the way the trail passes small parasitic cones such as Formica Leo, then climbs the final slope to the Dolomieu crater rim at about 2,631 m, where the wide, steaming crater drops away below. Visitors who prefer a shorter outing often turn around at Formica Leo or at the crater edge. Cloud frequently fills the caldera after midday, so an early start gives the clearest views and cooler temperatures; summit conditions are often windy at 8 to 15 degrees Celsius. There is no drinking water anywhere on the route and no refuge hut along the standard path, so three litres of water per person is a sensible minimum. In fog the arrows can disappear quickly, and hikers should stay on the marked line and turn back if visibility closes in. Public transport does not reach Pas de Bellecombe, so a rental car or organised transfer is the usual way in, and Saint-Denis lies roughly 1.5 hours away by road.

  • Avoid the lava after rain, when the surface becomes slippery.

When to visit

May to November gives the clearest, driest days, and early morning offers the best visibility before cloud builds in the caldera.

Accessibility

The trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers because of the stepped caldera descent and rough lava surface. The viewpoint at the Pas de Bellecombe car park offers a view of the caldera without hiking.
