Cabo da Roca

Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, is a photographer's headland in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park near Colares, west of Lisbon in Portugal. The granite cliffs fall about 140 metres to the Atlantic, and the foreground is a wind-bent mix of ice plant, thrift and low scrub that flowers in spring. The key subjects are the stone monument with the line from Camões about the land ending and the sea beginning, the white lighthouse dating from 1772, the fenced cliff edge and the long view south along the coast towards Cascais. The monument is best photographed at sunset, when low light colours the stone and the ocean, and dramatic cloud formations are common. A path of a few hundred metres leads to a lower viewpoint with an unobstructed angle towards the lighthouse and the open sea. Wind is almost constant and can be strong, so a stable tripod, lens hood and lens cloth are useful, and spray from the cliffs can reach equipment on rough days. Fog is also frequent, even in summer, and can blur the view, though it adds a moody atmosphere. Tour buses arrive in late morning and early afternoon, making the monument crowded, so early morning and late evening are better for clean frames. The location is free and open at all hours, and a small cafe and visitor centre sell certificates. Parking is limited near the site. Visitors should keep behind barriers and avoid unfenced edges. Allow an hour for photography, longer for the coastal trail towards Praia da Ursa.
