São Jorge Castle (Castelo de São Jorge)

São Jorge Castle (Castelo de São Jorge) crowns the hill above the Alfama district in Lisbon, Portugal, and is the city's most visited viewpoint as well as its oldest fortified site. The walls trace back to Moorish construction in the 11th century and were later reworked after Afonso Henriques captured Lisbon in 1147, and the complex later served as a royal residence. Visitors enter through the gate at Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo and climb past a courtyard of cannon and statues to the ramparts, where eleven towers can be reached by narrow stone stairways. The wall walk is the main draw: it gives an uninterrupted view across the Baixa grid, the Tagus estuary, the 25 de Abril Bridge and the red-tiled roofs of Alfama. Inside the walls, an archaeological area displays Iron Age, Moorish and medieval remains, while the Torre de Ulisses houses a camera obscura that projects a live image of the city onto a concave dish. Peacocks wander the terraces and shaded gardens, and a small museum shows pottery and objects found on site. A café and restaurant sit within the grounds. Most visitors need two to three hours to walk the full circuit, including time at the viewpoints. The castle opens in the morning and stays open into the evening in summer, and late afternoon brings the softest light for photography over the river, with sunset the most atmospheric moment. Crowds peak between late morning and mid-afternoon, particularly in July and August, when queues at the ticket office and on the narrow tower stairs can build. Arriving at opening time or in the last two hours before closing is quieter. The approach from the city is steep and cobbled, so many visitors reach the entrance by Tram 28, a bus, or a taxi and then walk down through Alfama afterwards. Comfortable shoes help on the uneven stone, and a light layer is useful on the exposed ramparts, where wind off the river can be noticeable.
