DMZ & JSA (Demilitarized Zone)

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Korea's finest examples of late Joseon Dynasty architecture. Built between 1794-1796 by King Jeongjo to honor his father and create a new capital, the 5.7km fortress wall encircles the inner city of Suwon with elegant guard towers, turrets, water gates, and command posts. The fortress is remarkably intact and offers excellent walking with beautiful city views.

Nami Island (Namiseom)
Nami Island (Namiseom) is a small crescent-shaped island in the North Han River that achieved worldwide fame as the filming location for the beloved Korean drama 'Winter Sonata' (2002). The island is now an extraordinary cultural space run as a 'republic' with its own stamps, currency, and laws. Gyeongju is often called the 'museum without walls' - the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom (57 BC - 935 AD) where UNESCO World Heritage Sites include thousands of royal burial tumuli scattered throughout the city, Bulguksa Temple, and the Seokguram Grotto. Gyeongju deserves at least a full day and ideally an overnight stay, but a day trip by KTX is feasible for dedicated history lovers.
