Hidden gems

Off-the-beaten-path corners most travellers miss.

Savo Island Hot Springs

Active volcanic island north of Guadalcanal with natural thermal springs and megapode bird nesting sites. The megapodes lay eggs in volcanic sand heated by geothermal activity. Relatively few tourists visit this fascinating geological and biological wonder. Day trips available from Honiara.

Marau Sound

Remote eastern Guadalcanal region with pristine lagoons, incredible diving, and traditional villages largely untouched by modern development. Home to Tavanipupu Island Resort but most of the area remains wild. Crystal-clear water, abundant marine life, and authentic cultural experiences.

Mataniko Falls

Spectacular waterfall in the jungle south of Honiara where water crashes into a cave system. The main falls drop into a large cavern creating a dramatic natural cathedral. Local guides lead adventurous treks through the river valley passing WWII relics and smaller falls. Less visited than Tenaru but equally impressive.

Skull Island (Nusa Hope)

Sacred site in the Western Province where ancient skulls of chiefs and warriors are preserved in traditional shrines. Accessible from Munda with permission and local guide. Deeply significant to local culture and offers insight into traditional beliefs. Not a casual tourist site but a profound cultural experience.

Florida Islands (Nggela Islands)

Cluster of islands north of Guadalcanal with excellent diving, pristine beaches, and traditional villages. Less developed than Guadalcanal with authentic island lifestyle. Site of early WWII naval battles. Day trips or overnight stays possible from Honiara.

Lengakiki Ridge Panorama

A ridge above Honiara's residential suburbs offering a sweeping 180-degree view over the capital, Henderson Airport, and Iron Bottom Sound that most visitors completely miss. On clear days Savo Island, Florida Islands, and even the outline of Malaita are visible. The ridge runs roughly parallel to Skyline Drive but is far less visited, giving you the view to yourself.

Mt. Austin Radio Tower Viewpoint

Drive beyond the Japanese Peace Memorial up to the Mt. Austin radio tower for the single highest viewpoint above Honiara accessible by vehicle. The view takes in the complete panorama — the coastal strip of Honiara, the full extent of Iron Bottom Sound, and the Weathercoast mountains behind the city. Almost no tourists come here beyond the memorial.

Vatilau Rock Fishing Foreshore

A quiet stretch of rocky shoreline west of Point Cruz where the local fishing community keeps their outrigger canoes. The colourful proas and weathered fishermen's shacks make for outstanding photography, and early mornings see fishermen returning with the night's catch. Completely off the tourist map and just 10 minutes' walk from central Honiara.

Guadalcanal American Memorial at Dawn

Arriving before 6:00 AM lets you have the entire memorial to yourself in soft golden light before the day's heat builds. The view across Iron Bottom Sound towards Savo Island with dawn colours on the water is one of the Solomon Islands' most moving sights. The silence and solitude amplify the memorial's emotional weight.

Henderson Airport Beach (Lunga Point)

The black sand beach near the WWII airfield provides an east-facing shoreline perfect for sunrise watching, with the Pacific horizon unobstructed. Visiting during early morning also means you may see traditional outrigger canoes from nearby villages heading to fishing grounds.

Lengakiki Ridge Sunrise Walk

Watch Honiara wake up from above — dawn light on the harbour, Henderson Airport showing its first activity of the day, and Iron Bottom Sound turning from silver to blue as the sun climbs. One of the most complete sunrise panoramas available above any Pacific capital city.

Point Cruz Waterfront and Yacht Club

The classic Honiara sunset spot — watch the sky turn red and orange over Iron Bottom Sound from the Yacht Club terrace with a cold Solbrew in hand. Boats bob in the foreground and Savo Island sits on the horizon. Consistently spectacular year-round.

Kakabona Beach

The west-facing beach at Kakabona Village provides unobstructed sunset views with virtually no other tourists. Local children playing in the shallows and outrigger canoes hauled up on the beach provide perfect silhouettes against the setting sun. A 15-minute taxi ride from Honiara.

Mt. Austin Japanese Peace Memorial

The elevated position of the Japanese Memorial creates a dramatic sunset prospect over Honiara and Iron Bottom Sound. The reflective mood of the memorial combined with fading light creates a uniquely contemplative atmosphere. Few visitors stay until sunset.
